I´m pretty sure that in Skyrim you don´t need to cast a single spell to get in to the college, you can just use a shout at the gate keeper and say you are the dragonborn and they will let you walk in..

        2. Jonathan c says:

But you aren’t a normal person you’re the guy who shuts the gates of oblivion or the leader of every guild in the country or the savior of kvatch

        3. Britt says:

Thank you for making this video. For the duration of the entire video I've been cleaning my vintage drum kit I haven't cleaned in 10+ years.

…still goin. CLEAN YOUR DRUM SETS BOYS!!

        4. kent says:

There's lots of real life inspiration to explain how your good character ended up in jail, shouldn't be that hard lol.

        5. Geregorful says:

If Morrowind was ahead of it's time with gravity and jumping then what Gothic was?
I gues most of you don't even know of existance of this ACTION RPG from 2001.

        6. Drake Bell says:

I disagree with a lot of the way you view games and what makes a game immersive or good. But this was a very well done video and I enjoyed it.

        7. Rob Lewis says:

Look its easy to be critical looking back. However i grew up in the 90s with a nes and a snes. I used to look at the game box art and manuels and role play zelda etc in my garden. The games though were so linear and 2D that there was no role play possible. I was late teens when i discovered Oblivion, the first elder scrolls i played, and it was life changing. I still get nostalgia remembering the summer i spent playing it. Skyrim is arguably even more poorly constructed but guess what, im currently on a new play through and i am already planning the next.

        8. Preston Rodenkirch says:

I'm curious what system you played this on. I know of a glitch on the ps3 version that enables stealing with no negative to morality and items don't get marked as stolen, unlimited duplication of any thing except uniqueartifact type items, and can even make all summoned gear permanent so it never disappears giving you best nonmagical gear and almost no weight against encumbrance. All off of one tiny, easily missed glitch that I saw before even making it through the first room of the catacombs with the emperor and his guards. Literally while trying to figure out the game mechanics within the first hour. Less time playing than it took me to set up character appearance.

Also made a poison that an arrow shot at just past being able to see target a main castle guard would die before getting to you

And one potion would refill and keep full health, mana, and stamina for about a min or more. Can't remember exactly how long it lasted. Each stat was different on duration. Health might have lasted 5 min

        9. Preston Rodenkirch says:

If done right 3 stats ( luck plus two others) could be raised 5 points each each level up resulting in all stats maxed at 100 and luck somewhere around 255

        10. 9oh7music says:

in the 3 hours ive watched i’ve thought to myself this guy’s so much like karl jobst so many times its bonkers

        11. DwarfLord 420 says:

          Fantastic video so far.
          One very minor criticism.
I'm at the explanation of the leveling system.
          There are 8 attributes,not 7.
          You forgot Speed.

        12. Constantiam Bro says:

No cap. I actually couldn't play Oblivion seriously. I first played Skyrim, then Morrowind. Then I gave Oblivion a try. It was actually unreal, and I didn't even try to play the game for months because it felt so stupid in the beginning.

        13. trequor says:

The prisoner start does not necessitate the player being a legitimate criminal. They could easily be falsely imprisoned or perhaps a political prisoner

        14. scottishrob13 says:

Damn. I've never agreed so much with a video while disagreeing with most of the specific points haha We disagree on most specific accounts, but I just can't help but agree with your perspective overall. Awesome work though. I'm coming here from Patrician's video and I think, in a lot of ways, you've done a much better job of getting into the underlying nature of the game while side-stepping the specifics. This has been an awesome video to watch and listen to, and I'm glad it exists! I find myself craving more long-form Elder Scrolls content from any competent source that I can find lately.

        15. Bird Overlord says:

You give a lot of praise to the Skyrim levelling system, and I largely agree with it, but simultaneously, after playing Enderal, I realized a problem that the Skyrim levelling system presents. Because you can only level up by using your skills, the game winds up kind of punishing you if you find alternate ways around your enemies. Namely, because Enderal uses a traditional experience system, you can do things like trick enemies into triggering traps and still get rewarded for doing so and feel smart for it. This is especially compounded by the minor but important changes Enderal made to Skyrim's base combat that make it more difficult and have a lot more important decisions to be made. In Skyrim, if you get clever and use the environment to trick enemies into dying, they'll be dead and you can get the loot, but if you go the whole game trying to do that, you'll be fucked when you meet the bosses and have no chance and find yourself below on skill level to do anything proper against them.

Enderal also itself addressed the problem with the way levels handle skill increases. Rather than choose your skill increases immediately upon levelling, Enderal give the player learning points, which must be spent by reading skill books to increase your skills. This give an in-game reasoning for the players gradual increase in skills, and also adds in a whole new layer for what money is used for, since you now need to be spending money on skill books, making it much more difficult to horde money for the whole game and get whatever you want whenever you want, especially since the books get more expensive as your skill goes up. It's a really interesting system that makes for some very dynamic gameplay.

        16. L B says:

1:05:00 no I hate codex crap in games the lore in tes is esoteric and cool and you have to actually read the books to learn stuff keep it that way the lore doesn't HAVE to be common knowledge why does everything have to spoonfeed people now. anyway good video

        17. Roly Poly Games says:

I've been watching a few takes on oblivion and the other TES games.
I have to say, this is a well done one. Nice to see a lot of feedback about what works and what doesn't. Still got about half to go on it.

2:31:40 "An elder scrolls every 2 years." Pain…

2:41:00 I'd argue that quicksave and quickloads are on the onus of the player to decide of themselves if they wish to rob themselves of a genuine challenging experience.

2:50:00 whole heartedly disagree about oblivion's combat system being an improvement. The problem with Morrowind's was it never clearly explained why you wouldn't hit. The rat with the iron dagger a prime example of a player with inexperience with a dagger missing repeatedly (He has a short blade skill of FIVE). This is the equivalent of giving a random person on the street a pair of nunchucks and telling them "to go wild." Late game combat in Morrowind with experience in a weapon was a much better feeling than oblivion' where it felt the same as when you started out. The problem with Morrowind was there was no feedback besides the whiff noise.

2:54:00 I agree skills and talents would have helped immensely its something I feel still lacks for fighter classes in TES games. As far as stamina and movement a crucial issue early on like you said but there are potions and spells that regenerate that stuff. Not an excuse for a problem early on, but the game definitely heavily encourages potion usage.

        18. William Thompson says:

the whole prisoner start thing is kinda contradictory to their motto. they tryed to fix this in skyrim by making it seem like you were in the wrong place at the wrong time. if you pick a nord, the guy tells you that "it was a bad time to come home", hinting that they were just rounding up anyone they found near the border. if/when i play a morally credible guy i just treat it as if i was framed or was in the wrong place at the wrong time

        19. Will Mistretta says:

It's funny that I instinctively did the faction questlines in my most recent playthrough in worst-to-best order basically without realizing it. Then Shivering Isles.

        20. SyntheticCharmVA says:

My response to the micro-rant on fallout's epilogue. Most people weren't complaining about the epilogue, they were complaining about the ending and ending choices specifically, hense why new vagas Doesn't get those complaints and why people complained about fallout 4.

        21. Terry Meme says:

I agree with the quest portion of this, been replaying oblivion as of recent as well as a bit of skyrim.

(Spoilers obviously so if you haven't played oblivion/skyrim yet, what the hell go do it…)

I feel like the main stories always do push that "good guy" mentality being the "chosen one" and "Savor" type even if you are trying to roleplay as an evil assassin or thief type character. For example during the whole locating the mythic dawn quest, where you find their hideout to get the amulet back, there could have been a whole "Evil" route where you actually join up with them and start fighting a weakened empire perhaps even betraying mankar and taking over the cult in the and changing their goals.

of course I know main stories for the elder scrolls aren't really meant for player choice, it'd still be interesting to see various endings depending on your choices, rather than it being a sort of "worlds ending and you have to stop it" sort of deal. Skyrim did alright with this when it came to side quests, though the payoff for some of those quests were sort of lack-luster (destroying the dark brotherhood being one of them, though awesome the choice was there none the less)

        22. JohnPonn says:

1:02:41 “you’d also have to prepare yourself for a video twice as long as this one”

alright i guess i’ll just rewatch PatricianTV’s “quick” retrospective on Oblivion
