Một lý thuyết khoa học là một cách giải thích một lĩnh vực nào đó của thế giới tự nhiên mà có thể, căn cứ theo phương pháp khoa học, được kiểm nghiệm lặp lại được, sử dụng một phương cách quan sát và thực nghiệm đã được định sẵn.^[1][2] Những lý thuyết khoa học đã được công bố đã đứng vững trước sự xem xét kĩ lưỡng và là một thể thức bao hàm toàn diện của kiến thức khoa học.^[3]

Một điều quan trọng cần chú ý là định nghĩa “lý thuyết khoa học” (thường được gọi tắt cho thuận tiện một cách không rõ ràng thành “thuyết” hay “lý thuyết”, kể cả trong trang này) là khác biệt rõ ràng với cách dùng thường ngày của từ “thuyết”.^[4] Trong ngôn ngữ không mang tính khoa học thường ngày, “thuyết” có thể dùng để chỉ điều gì đó không được chứng minh và một dự đoán, phỏng đoán, ý tưởng hoặc giả thuyết;^[4] cách dùng như vậy đối ngược với từ “thuyết” trong khoa học. Những sự khác biệt trong cách dùng này có thể so sánh với sự khác nhau, và thường là đối lập, của cách dùng thuật ngữ “dự đoán” trong khoa học với “dự đoán” trong ngôn ngữ thường ngày, vốn để chỉ một ý tưởng đơn thuần.
